It’s rewarding to volunteer time toward something that directly impacts your personal life. For one Lawliner, Oi Wo Mark, Director of Engineering, using a Give Back Day to chaperone Field Day at his daughter’s school led to meaningful memories. Here’s what the day looked like through his eyes:
1. What inspired you to spend your Give Back Day chaperoning Field Day at Makayla’s school?
On May 30th, my wife and I took the day off to join our daughter Makayla for her school’s Field Day. It’s a once-a-year event that I always look forward to because it’s one of the few opportunities for parents to see their kids working together as a class in a fun and active setting. Held at a nearby park, Field Day is a time for students to bond outside the classroom, and I’ve always wanted to be part of Makayla’s school experience in this way. Not to mention, the weather that day was perfect!
2. What was your favorite moment or activity during the day?
I really enjoyed all the games Makayla’s gym teacher had set up, but if I had to pick one, it would be the relay race. The kids raced against other same-grade classes and had to work together as a team. The highlight was at the end, where they had to pass a hula hoop down the line while holding hands—without letting go. It was such a fun and creative challenge that required coordination and teamwork. The best part of each activity was hearing the entire class cheer loudly for each other and their class number. It was a beautiful display of team spirit and unity.
3. How did it feel to be part of such a fun and impactful event with the kids?
It felt amazing and Makayla was so happy to have us there! She even held our hands while walking from the school to the park. My wife and I also got to catch up with other parents who were able to join, which made the experience even more meaningful. One fun fact: Makayla has three very close friends, and somehow I ended up being in charge of holding all of their water bottles while another parent was stuck holding all their jackets. I guess that was our way of “supporting” the team during Field Day!
