Over the next few weeks, employees will be receiving a calendar invite from me for a stay interview. If you're not sure what that means or what to expect, this post is for you.
What is a stay interview?
A stay interview is a one-on-one conversation between me and an employee designed to understand what's working well in their experience at Lawline, what could be better, and what keeps them engaged and motivated in their role. Think of it as the opposite of an exit interview. Instead of asking why someone is leaving, we're asking what makes them want to stay, and what we can do to make their experience here even better.
It's not a performance conversation. It's not an evaluation. It's genuinely just a conversation about their experience here.
Why we do them
Most companies wait until someone gives notice to ask the questions that could have kept them. By then it's too late. Stay interviews flip that model entirely. They give us the opportunity to hear directly from our employees while there's still time to act.
The feedback from these conversations directly influences decisions we make about culture, development, workload, recognition, and more. When something comes up consistently across multiple conversations, we take it seriously. This is one of the most direct ways your voice shapes what Lawline looks like as a place to work.
What to expect
Our conversation will be relaxed and confidential. There are no wrong answers and no trick questions. I'll ask you things like what do they look forward to at work, what a great day looks like for them, what might make them consider leaving, and what would make their experience here even better. Employees don't need to prepare anything formal, just come ready to be honest.
I genuinely look forward to these conversations every year because they remind me why this work matters. Getting to sit with each person on this team and hear directly about their experience is one of the most valuable things I do in my role.
