When the Lunch Table Became a Safe Space

By Miylie Roan

What started as a casual fall favorites conversation turned into something none of us planned for, and it was one of the most meaningful Lunch Tables we've had all year.

We opened the way we always do. Fall is officially here, what do you love about it? People shared their seasonal plans, the weather in their states, their Halloween plans. It was a warm and easy moment of connection, exactly what a midday break is supposed to feel like!

And then, in the middle of it, someone shared a personal challenge they were facing. In their share, they emphasized the urgency and stress of the situation but instead of logging off or pretending everything was fine, she shared it with us. The room shifted and people leaned in. Everyone offered empathy and emotional support.

We talk about physiological safety as a concept but psychological safety isn't built in workshops or policy documents. It's built in moments exactly like this one. When someone trusts that a space is safe enough to say "I'm dealing with something hard right now" and the people around them respond with care rather than discomfort.

The Lunch Table exists to give our team a reason to show up for each other, connection. What we learned in this particular session is that sometimes showing up without an agenda is exactly how the most important conversations happen.
