Serving Those Who Serve: My Experience with the Wills for Heroes Program
Written by Cali Franks, Program Attorney
I recently had the opportunity to participate in a truly meaningful event: the Bank of America and Bradley Law Firm's Wills for Heroes program. This initiative, which took place on September 11th, allowed me to use my legal skills to give back to those who serve and protect us every day. Here's a glimpse into this impactful experience.
What Inspired Me to Get Involved
As the daughter of a first responder, September 11th has always held a special significance for me. It's a day that reminds us of the incredible bravery and sacrifice of those who run towards danger to keep others safe. When I learned about the Wills for Heroes program through faculty member Martin Merritt, I knew I had to be part of it. It was fun to connect with our faculty members and share this experience!
The statistics are sobering: on 9/11, 80% of those who passed away did not have wills or estate documents in place. This program aims to change that for our local heroes. The chance to provide peace of mind to those who put their lives on the line daily was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.
A Memorable Moment
One of the most impactful experiences of the day was witnessing the gratitude of the Dallas Police officers we served. Over 70 officers signed up for the event, each leaving with completed wills and essential estate documents.
What struck me most was the realization that these brave men and women, who think of others' safety daily, rarely have the time or opportunity to consider their own future security. Seeing the relief on their faces as they walked away with their completed documents was incredibly moving. It was a powerful reminder of how our professional skills can make a real difference in people's lives.
Advice for Making a Positive Impact
For those looking to make a positive impact in their community or workplace, here's my advice:
- Use Your Skills: Whatever your profession or expertise, there's likely a way to use it for good. As lawyers, we used our legal knowledge, but every skill can be valuable in community service.
- Don't Underestimate Small Actions: Even a few hours of your time can make a significant difference. We completed essential documents for officers in just two-hour sessions, potentially changing the course of their families' futures.
- Connect with Your 'Why': Understanding your personal connection to a cause can fuel your passion and commitment. For me, my father's service as a first responder made this event particularly meaningful.
Participating in Give Back Days and events like Wills for Heroes reminds me of the power we have to create positive change. It's not just about the tangible outcomes – it's about building a legacy of compassion and unity that truly embodies the resilient spirit of our country.
