Giving Back in Roslyn, New York

By Gabby DiSilvio

I recently used my Give Back Day to volunteer at the Junior League of Long Island Thrift Shop in Roslyn, New York. As a Junior League of Long Island member, this space means a great deal to me. The Thrift Shop is not just a storefront; it is the heart of the League’s fundraising efforts. Because all merchandise is donated, nearly one hundred percent of the proceeds go directly toward supporting community programs. Every person who comes in to thrift, whether searching for a special find or simply browsing, helps fund initiatives that support women and children across Long Island.

Those initiatives include some of my favorite programs, such as Birthday in a Box, which ensures children who might not otherwise receive birthday gifts are able to celebrate their special day. Other efforts include Thanksgiving Baskets, which provide full holiday meals to two hundred families; our annual Diaper Drive; and The Period Project, which distributes essential menstrual products to individuals in need. Knowing that a few hours of sorting clothes or tidying the shop helps support all of this work makes the experience incredibly meaningful.

During my shift, I assisted with sorting donations by determining what could be sold, re-donating items that were not a good fit, tagging clothing, setting aside pieces that needed cleaning, and keeping the shop floor organized. The work is hands-on, but I truly enjoy it. There is something uplifting about watching people discover great items while supporting an important cause. Volunteering in a space filled with so much Junior League history, which also serves as our headquarters, is always inspiring.

Using my Give Back Day reminded me how energizing it can be to step away from the laptop and dedicate time to something that directly impacts the community. If you are considering how to use your own day, my advice is simple: choose something that matters to you personally. Whether it is a one-day project or a long-term cause you already feel connected to, it is incredibly rewarding to spend time serving alongside people who share your values. It is a chance not only to give back, but to reconnect with your community and with yourself.
