Building Bridges: Connecting Through Team Building
By Miylie Roan, HR Generalist
Each quarter, we come together for a team-building event in person at our annual retreat or virtually throughout the year. I recently facilitated my first event, titled Building Bridges, focused on connection, creativity, and fun.
I chose the Building Bridges theme because, like a physical bridge, it symbolizes important aspects of teamwork. Getting on the same page is like being on the same road, building connections is similar to traveling together toward a common goal, and most importantly, healthy communication acts as the structure that supports the entire bridge.
Lawliners were divided into five teams to build a virtual bridge and then we picked a winner. The groups ranged from practical designs to creative ones, like a candy-themed bridge - yes, we checked—the sun wouldn’t melt the candy!
The winning group, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” stood out because they didn’t create a typical bridge. Instead, they focused on what a bridge represents: people holding hands, listening, communicating, respecting, and trusting each other. That was the essence of the exercise. There was no right or wrong way to draw the bridge, and I appreciated how this team came together in a thoughtful, creative way.
Overall, the reason we host these virtual team-building events is because, as a remote company, staying connected is essential and it’s a priority to maintain those connections year-round. No one should feel like they’re on an island—we’re all part of the same team, regardless of the function we work in.
